SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW, SOMEWHERE DOWN TO EARTH
once upon a time, someone sang about a place where dreams come true:
Somewhere over the rainbow,
Way up high,
There's a land that I heard of
Once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow,
Skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream,
Really do come true.
Lyrics from the "Wizard of Oz" are about a place where kids and families have
enjoyed seeing dreams come true for generations. But today, another kind of
amazing place exists in real-life Houston called the Snowdrop Foundation,
working magic through the Texas Children’s Hospital pediatric cancer center.
Radio personality Kevin Kline, co-host of KKBQ Q Morning Zoo show has
interviewed stars of TV, film, music and sports including actor-writer-director
Henry (The Fonz) Winkler, boxing promoter Don King, Academy Award winning
actress Gwyneth Paltrow, singing sensation, LeAnn Rimes, and many more.
However, the brightest superstar Kevin ever met, and the one who changed his
life forever was a courageous, beautiful 15 year-old named, Chelsey Campbell.
Kevin met Chelsey at the hospital while doing a radio station fundraising event
in December of 2005. “I couldn’t believe how beautiful Chelsey was,” Kevin tells
Cyberspacers in this exclusive interview. "And she had everything to live for."
Meet Chelsey and other Snowdrop kids filled with hope, courage and love
"Yet the fact is Chelsey was battling for her life. Doctors said she had a 10%
chance to see her 16th birthday," Kevin explains. "Her determination to beat
the odds was the catalyst that inspired me and my wife, Trish, to do something
special for Chelsey. I promised her a birthday present that would last forever."
While the lion in "Oz" went looking for courage, the real-life Chelsey Campbell
had courage never to give up even though the odds were stacked against her.
"On February 21, 2006, Chelsey underwent tumor removal surgery, surviving
a record setting operation that lasted 27 continuous hours," Kevin continues.
"Her surgery was dubbed a “marathon”, so to honor Chelsey I promised her
that I would run a marathon."
Experiencing tragedy in his own family, Kevin’s promises to Chelsey rang true.
As a youngster, Kevin was a superb athlete. His overbearing father insisted he
plan to play pro baseball. When Kevin told his dad he had other plans, a radio
career, his dad all but called him a failure. Still, he didn’t hate his father, the
rejection motivated him to succeed. But he became selfish and materialistic,
